I’ve been a big believer in THC gummies for sleep for a long time.
When I really need help shutting things down at night, our Lights Out gummies have always worked incredibly well for me. THC and CBN can be a pretty powerful combination when your brain doesn’t seem to understand that the day is over.
But recently, I decided to try something different.
Instead of reaching for my usual THC sleep gummy every night, I switched to Lights Out Zero, our sugar-free, THC-free, and melatonin-free sleep gummy.
I wasn’t trying to prove anything. I was mostly curious whether a gentler, non-psychoactive sleep gummy could give me the same full night of sleep I had come to expect from THC.
So far, I’ve been pleasantly surprised.
What Changed for Me After Switching to THC-Free Sleep Gummies
Since switching from THC sleep gummies to Lights Out Zero, I’ve personally noticed:
- Less desire to snack before bed
- No late-night added sugar, since Lights Out Zero is sugar-free
- A clearer head at night, especially when finishing emails or work
- I’m still sleeping through the night without constantly waking up
- Clearer mornings with no lingering THC buzz
- It feels easier to wake up earlier
- A break from nightly THC, which seems to help keep my THC tolerance lower
The biggest surprise? I realized I don’t necessarily need THC every night to get the kind of sleep I’m looking for.
Why I Wanted to Try a THC-Free Sleep Gummy
My experience with our regular Lights Out gummies has always been great. I fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up feeling rested.
But THC also comes with effects that aren't necessarily needed every single night.
One of the biggest things I noticed was appetite. THC has always made me more likely to wander into the kitchen before bed, even when I wasn't actually hungry.
And when late-night snacking does happen, it’s usually not exactly the healthiest meal of the day.
Switching to Lights Out Zero has meant less desire to eat before bed, and because the gummies themselves are sugar-free, I’m also not adding sugar to my nighttime routine right before going to sleep.
That might sound like a small thing, but for something I may take regularly at night, I really like knowing there’s no added sugar involved.
There was also the mental shift that comes with THC.
I tend to check the last few emails of the day before bed, and once a THC gummy starts kicking in, I'm obviously not quite as sharp as I was before taking it.
And while I never experienced what I would call a THC “hangover” or morning grogginess from Lights Out, there were mornings when I could still detect a slight residual buzz.
None of these were dealbreakers. But they made me wonder:
Could I get the sleep benefits I wanted without needing THC every night?
What’s in Lights Out Zero?
That question was part of the thinking behind Lights Out Zero.
It contains zero THC, zero melatonin, and zero added sugar. Instead, each gummy combines:
- 10mg CBN
- 10mg CBD
- 60mg Glycine
- 60mg Chamomile Extract
- 50mg Passion Fruit Extract
- 50mg Tart Cherry Extract
- 25mg L-Theanine
The idea is very different from creating the strongest sleep gummy possible.
It's about giving your nighttime routine a gentler nudge in the right direction without getting high.
And if I feel like I need a little more support that night, I can take two and get 20mg of CBN + 20mg of CBD without worrying about getting too high or doubling up on melatonin. I really like having that flexibility.
After switching, that distinction became much more obvious to me.
The Biggest Difference: My Nights Feel Clearer
The first thing I noticed wasn't actually sleep.
It was everything before sleep.
I can take Lights Out Zero and continue answering emails, finishing up work, watching something, or just going about my evening without waiting for that familiar THC feeling to arrive.
There’s no buzz.
There’s no sudden case of the munchies.
And there isn't that moment where I realize, Okay, I'm definitely not getting any more work done tonight.
I simply start winding down.
For me, that has made the last hour or two of the day feel noticeably clearer.
I’m Still Sleeping Through the Night
This was the part I was most curious about.
Falling asleep is one thing. Staying asleep is another.
One of the reasons I've always liked cannabinoid sleep gummies is that I don't just want help getting to sleep. I want to avoid waking up over and over again throughout the night.
Since switching to Lights Out Zero, I've still been getting full nights of sleep without constantly waking up in the middle of the night.
That's obviously my personal experience, not a guarantee that everyone will respond the same way.
But there is some interesting early research around CBN and sleep.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 293 participants with poor sleep quality, researchers found that CBN reduced nighttime awakenings and overall sleep disturbance compared with placebo. The study did not find a significant improvement in how quickly participants fell asleep, and more research is still needed.
That distinction actually lines up with what interests me most about CBN: not necessarily knocking you out, but potentially playing a role in a calmer, more consistent night.
My Mornings Feel Even Clearer
This has probably been my favorite part of the experiment.
Again, I never really experienced morning grogginess from our THC Lights Out gummies.
But there's a difference between not feeling groggy and feeling completely clear.
With THC out of the equation, I've noticed that waking up earlier feels easier. There isn't even that subtle residual THC feeling I would occasionally notice the morning after taking a stronger sleep gummy.
I wake up and feel like the night is simply over.
For someone who likes getting an early start, I've really enjoyed that.
An Unexpected Bonus: Giving My THC Tolerance a Break
This was something I wasn't necessarily thinking about when I made the switch.
By not taking THC every night, I'm naturally using much less THC overall.
And I've noticed that when I do decide it's a night for what I jokingly call “the big guns” and reach for a High Dose Lights Out gummy, it seems to hit me harder than it did when THC was part of my nightly routine.
In other words, taking a break from nightly THC seems to have made THC feel more effective for me when I actually want it.
Tolerance is a real consideration with regular cannabis use, although the relationship between cannabinoids, tolerance, withdrawal, and sleep is complicated and still being studied.
For me, I don't think of this as swearing off THC.
Quite the opposite.
I like having it available for the nights when I really need it. I just discovered that I don't necessarily need it every night.
You Don’t Have to Go Straight From THC to Zero
This is another thing I think is important: you don't have to give up THC completely just because you want to dial things back.
CBDX has four different Lights Out options, so there’s a pretty natural progression depending on how much THC you actually want or need at night.
High Dose Lights Out: 10mg D9 THC + 10mg CBN
This is what I jokingly call my “bring out the big guns” option. It's there for the nights when I want the full THC experience and more help winding things down.
Mid Dose Lights Out: 5mg D9 THC + 10mg CBN
Half the THC of the High Dose while still keeping the same 10mg of CBN. If you like THC at night but don't necessarily feel like you need 10mg, this gives you an easy step down.
Low Dose Lights Out: 2.5mg D9 THC + 10mg CBN, with no melatonin
This takes the THC down another step while maintaining the same 10mg of CBN. There's also no melatonin, so it can be an interesting middle ground if you want to cut out melatonin without giving up THC completely.
Lights Out Zero: 0mg THC + 10mg CBN + 10mg CBD, with no melatonin
And then there's Zero, which is where I've landed for most nights lately. No THC, no melatonin, and no psychoactive effects.
In other words, the THC progression looks like this:
10mg → 5mg → 2.5mg → 0mg
You Can Personalize It Even Further
Another thing I like is that you don’t necessarily have to take more THC just because you want a little more nighttime support.
Lunar Drift has become a great way to personalize the mix. Each gummy has 15mg CBN + 5mg CBD with no THC, so you can stack one with your preferred Lights Out gummy to increase the CBN and CBD without automatically increasing the THC or melatonin along with it.
For example, maybe 5mg of THC from a Mid Dose Lights Out is your sweet spot, but you want a little more CBN that night. Instead of taking another Lights Out and doubling the THC too, you can add a Lunar Drift and keep the THC right where you want it.
I think of it as stacking your gummies: adjusting the CBN and CBD around the amount of THC that works for you, rather than assuming more of everything is always better.
That flexibility really gets back to what this whole experiment has taught me:
“What’s the gentlest option that can still give me the night of sleep I’m looking for?”
What I like about having these options is that it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing decision.
If you're currently taking 10mg of THC every night, you might find that 5mg is enough on some nights. Maybe 2.5mg gets the job done other nights. And you may eventually discover, like I did, that there are plenty of nights when you don't really need THC at all.
The same goes for melatonin. If you like having THC and CBN as part of your nighttime routine but want to leave melatonin out of the equation, Low Dose gives you that middle ground before going completely THC-free with Zero.
Having those choices has actually changed the question I ask myself at night.
Instead of:
“What's the strongest sleep gummy I can take?”
I've started asking:
“What's the gentlest option that can still give me the night of sleep I'm looking for?”
Some nights, the answer might still be High Dose. Other nights, it might be Mid or Low Dose.
And increasingly for me, it's been Zero.
THC vs. THC-Free Sleep Gummies: I Don't Think One Has to Win
That brings me to probably my biggest takeaway from all of this.
I don't think the question needs to be:
Are THC sleep gummies better than THC-free sleep gummies?
For me, they're useful for different nights.
If I've had one of those days where my brain simply will not shut off and I want something stronger, I still love Lights Out with THC.
But on a normal night?
I've increasingly found myself reaching for Lights Out Zero.
It feels gentler.
I can stay clear-headed through the end of my evening, I don't find myself raiding the kitchen before bed, there’s no added sugar in the gummy itself, I'm still sleeping through the night, and my mornings feel incredibly clear.
That's a pretty compelling trade for me.
What If You’re Sensitive to THC or Melatonin?
This is also where I think Lights Out Zero gets particularly interesting.
A lot of sleep gummies contain THC, melatonin, or both.
That works beautifully for plenty of people, myself included. But not everyone wants to get high before bed, and not everyone wants melatonin as part of their nighttime routine.
If you've been searching for a THC-free sleep gummy, a CBN sleep gummy without melatonin, a sugar-free sleep gummy, or simply something gentler to add to your nighttime routine, that's exactly the gap Lights Out Zero was designed to fill.
It's non-psychoactive, so you aren't taking it with the goal of feeling “high.”
The goal is much simpler:
Wind down. Go to sleep. Stay asleep. Wake up ready for tomorrow.
Sometimes You Don’t Need the Big Guns
I still think THC can be incredibly effective for sleep.
But this experiment has changed the way I think about using it.
Sometimes I want the stronger option.
Sometimes I want a little THC.
And sometimes I don't need THC or melatonin at all.
I've realized there's something really nice about having a sleep gummy that doesn't announce itself with a buzz. It just becomes part of the nighttime routine.
And that's ultimately why I like having four different Lights Out options instead of trying to make one gummy work for every person and every night.
If you want the stronger THC option, it's there.
If you simply want to dial the THC back from 10mg to 5mg or 2.5mg, those options are there too.
And if you're sensitive to THC or melatonin, want to take a break from THC, or just want to see whether something gentler can get the job done, there's Zero.
Because sometimes falling asleep doesn't require getting knocked out.
Sometimes you just need a little nudge.
And if the name Lights Out Zero makes it sound like you're getting less, don't let the “Zero” fool you.
For me, zero THC has turned out to be plenty.
Frequently Asked Questions About THC-Free Sleep Gummies
Do THC-free sleep gummies work?
They can for some people, but everyone responds differently. In my experience, switching from a THC sleep gummy to Lights Out Zero has still allowed me to sleep through the night without constantly waking up. Lights Out Zero combines CBN, CBD, glycine, chamomile extract, passion fruit extract, tart cherry extract, and L-theanine rather than THC or melatonin.
Can CBN help you stay asleep?
Research into CBN and sleep is still developing. One randomized, placebo-controlled study of 293 participants found that 20mg of CBN reduced nighttime awakenings and overall sleep disturbance compared with placebo, although it did not significantly reduce the time it took participants to fall asleep. More research is needed.
Can you get a sleep gummy without THC or melatonin?
Yes. Lights Out Zero contains 0mg THC and no melatonin. It uses 10mg CBN, 10mg CBD, and several additional ingredients as a non-psychoactive alternative.
What if I want less THC but don't want to stop taking it completely?
You don't necessarily have to go from a high-dose THC sleep gummy directly to a THC-free option. CBDX offers Lights Out with 10mg, 5mg, 2.5mg, and 0mg of D9 THC, allowing you to explore progressively lower amounts of THC. The 2.5mg Low Dose and Lights Out Zero options are also melatonin-free.
Can taking a break from THC lower your tolerance?
Regular THC exposure can contribute to tolerance, meaning the effects of the same dose may diminish over time. How quickly tolerance develops or changes varies considerably between individuals. Personally, I've found that using Lights Out Zero on most nights seems to make my higher-dose THC gummies feel more effective on the nights when I choose to use them.
Are Lights Out Zero gummies sugar-free?
Yes. Lights Out Zero is sugar-free, which is another reason I've enjoyed making it part of my nighttime routine. For me, that means I'm not adding sugar right before bed, and because I'm not experiencing the THC-related increase in appetite I sometimes noticed before, I've also had less desire to snack late at night.
